When Dieting Wears You Down

7-day-eating-planAnyone who tells you dieting is easy is either lying or has never had to lose weight! It is anything but easy as you need to literally change your lifestyle, stop eating all (or most anyway!) of your favourite foods and then there is the fact that you have cut your calories to such a degree that you seem to be constantly exhausted. If you find that your diet has caused you physical or mental fatigue, there are a few remedies that can have you feeling and functioning better quite quickly. Here are a few suggestions.

Foods that Increase Energy Levels

One of the things you may not have considered is that some foods provide more energy than others. Of course you need to count calories, watch your intake of fat and refined sugars but even then, the foods you have chosen for their low-cal content may not be giving you the energy you need. In fact, one of the worst mistakes you can make is to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. These are the nutrients that supply mitochondrial energy and are necessary to combat fatigue. Learn the difference between good carbs and bad carbs and you will find your energy levels rising before you know it.

Revisit Your Diet Plan

There is a possibility that you have cut out too many calories! Some people go overboard when dieting and if you are one of those ‘instant gratification’ personality types, you may want to revisit your diet plan. Pay careful attention to the amount of calories you need to maintain a specific body weight (your target weight here) and that is the amount you should be eating on your diet. Remember, those calories are for maintaining your goal weight but you are not there yet. It will take longer to lose the weight this way but you certainly won’t be as tired all the time.

Supplements that Are Safe

Many people swear by supplements like green tea extract or gingko. Whilst these do give you a bit of physical energy, they can’t compete with nootropic supplements that improve mental clarity. Products like generic Provigil are available online and can significantly improve your ability to focus when you are simply too worn out to think. Don’t ever use supplements in lieu of a healthy diet though because you will be doing your body more harm than good. If you know that you are on a healthy weight loss diet yet are still too fatigued to function mentally as well as physically, then you may augment your regimen with supplements. Again, never use supplements instead of eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals yet low in calories.

Dieting is never anyone’s favourite activity but if you have gained a significant amount of weight over the years you may have no alternative but to diet. Just remember to approach your diet from a healthy perspective and don’t try to lose all that weight too quickly. It didn’t build up overnight so you can’t expect to lose it that fast either. A healthy approach is always safest.
